Afghanistan: challenges, opportunities and strategies

Vienna, Austria: The fall of the national government in Afghanistan and the forceful takeover by the Taliban has given rise to a host of questions around migration and displacement as well as an unfolding humanitarian crisis. The plight of Afghanistan is one of the most pressing issues facing the international community today. Against this background a dedicated session devoted to Afghanistan was held at the Vienna Migration Conference 2021 yesterday. High level speakers highlighted the challenges facing Afghanistan as well as the opportunities and strategies to shape the country’s future.

Orientation workshop on safe and regular migration with 50 imams in Bangladesh

Cumilla, Bangladesh: Religious leaders are an important and influential group in Bangladesh. For this reason we were delighted to hold an orientation workshop on safe and regular migration with fifty imams (religious leaders in local mosques) from Cumilla. “This is the first time we attended a session on migration and we now realise its importance more fully. Some of us used to be migrants ourselves”, said one of the participants.

Train the Trainers: five-day pre-departure orientation session in Tajikistan

Dushanbe, Tajikistan: Our Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) in Dushanbe was set up to meet the needs of Tajik citizens who are planning to migrate, or have already done so, for the purposes of work and study. The MRC’s mission is therefore to provide Tajiks with neutral, reliable and up-to-date factual information on what they should do, the documentation they require and the processes that they should follow to make informed decisions on migration.

30 Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) Ambassadors appointed in Bangladesh

Cumilla, Bangladesh: Our research has shown us that the decisions of potential migrants are significantly impacted by their peer group. Within this context we have officially appointed 30 Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) Ambassadors in Bangladesh. These young people have been chosen as youth leaders for their energy and dedication, and were hand-picked by our MRCs following several orientation sessions that they carried out in colleges and universities across Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Television (BTV) features our MRCs in a programme to mark National Information Day

Dhaka, Bangladesh: To mark National Information Day in Bangladesh, Bangladesh Television (BTV), the government’s official TV channel featured our Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) in its special coverage to commemorate the occasion. MRC Coordinator Mahabubul Alam presented the various information campaigns and community education outreach that the MRCs conduct nationwide. These activities include distributing information materials, conducting workshops with local officials and academia, as well as campaigns in markets and bazaars to promote safe and regular migration.

Baghdad, Iraq: Our Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) in Iraq has carried out awareness raising sessions to help Iraqi citizens identify the risks of irregular immigration and human trafficking, as well as answering questions from those in attendance. Our team carried out this session during their visit to the Al-Mautassim Center for Vocational Training.

High-level conference on internal and external migration in tajikistan

Dushanbe, Tajikistan: On 24th September 2021, ICMPD and our Tajikistan MRC took part in the Republican Scientific and Practical Conference on Achievements in the sphere of Labour, Migration and Employment of Population During the Period of Independence organised by the Ministry of Labour, Migration and Employment of Population of the Republic of Tajikistan. This high-level conference was attended by some of the great minds from Tajik academia who presented their scholarly works and reports on the changing trends of internal and external migration in Tajikistan since the day of its independence.

Honorable Minister of the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment inaugurates the Bangladesh Migrant Resource Centre (MRC)

Dhaka, Bangladesh: The Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) was officially inaugurated on 27th September by the Honorable Md. Shahidul Islam, ndc, Director General (Additional Secretary), Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training. The MRCs in Dhaka and Cumilla have been operational since March 2020 to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration in Bangladesh.

Expert workshop in Iraq on Irregular Migration

Baghdad, Iraq: ICMPD delivered the third expert training workshop on Irregular Migration, organised under the project, “Developing the Iraqi Government’s knowledge and expertise in migration governance” (Project IMED). six pre-departure orientation sessions held in Pakistan

Lahore, Pakistan: On 13-17th September our Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) team in collaboration with the Protectorate of Emigrants, Lahore conducted six Pre-Departure Orientation Sessions. In total, 255 outgoing male migrants were briefed about their migrant workers’ rights and responsibilities, covering the rules and regulations in the destination country.
