Expert workshop on migration management in Iraq

Baghdad, Iraq: The first expert workshop for the project on Developing the Iraqi Government’s knowledge and expertise in migration management (IMED) was conducted (virtually) in Baghdad at the Coral Palace Hotel on 11-13th April. The workshop was attended by the project Core Group, comprising senior officers from five ministries (Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Displaced, Interior, Planning, and Labour and Social Affairs).

The purpose of the workshop was to provide the Iraqi national counterparts with the basic knowledge, the current discourse, and both a theoretical and empirical understanding of Migration and Development. These are topics of wider strategic interest to Iraq which transcend the specific interest and function of each ministry and promote a “whole-of-government” approach to addressing the subject. Specific areas of focus included diaspora engagement, remittances, skills transfers and education migration, and migration and environment.

This activity is funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration and implemented by International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).
